At various points in the past, the city has been known as "San Cristóbal", "Las Casas", "Ciudad Real", and now "San Cristóbal de Las Casas". Bartolomé de Las Casas was a Spanish priest who fought for the rights of the Native Americans. The city is well known for its beautiful colonial era architecture.
